Exploring and analysing natural materials from specific places of meaning through four projects

About

Throughout this trimester I have been working on four projects simultaneously. The overarching theme is cultivating the properties of natural materials and their significance when reflecting on places of deep emotional connection.

Wearing Your Sanctuary – Case study

Case study involving two participants, creating an item of jewellery design using natural materials from their places of meaning specific to them. Data gathered through a diary study and interviews with a psychologist.

Arenophile

Collection of sand from 50 locations, fired into glass then analysed and arranged into a three-dimensional diamond graph using four ‘purity’ points.

Fragmented Tests

Ceramic works decorated with mosaics of broken sea urchin pieces collected from Brough of Birsay. This collection was inspired by our field trip to Orkney.

We Should Have Brought Mum

A series of thrown pots and vessels inspired by Catacol Bay. Including experiments of ways to integrate sand; such as creating glazes and embedding.

Arenophile

Series of small glass jars - containing sand from different locations - on wooden block shelves
