Matilda Sandground
Drawing MFA
Mixed media drawing and installation work exploring colour, shape and surface revealed through mindful engagement with outside environments.
About
Venturing along my local coastline is a mindful and sensory focused time whilst I absorb and forage the geological essence of an outdoor space. My mind is free to wander through a lens of discovery and wonder as I scan the shore for earthly fragments and stones which have been weathered and worn by stormy seas and clockwork tides. Drawing is my tool for translating the memory of a place which I do so instinctively by referencing organic colour, shape and textures I encounter within the landscape.
Intrigued by the forces of nature and ecology which shape and score the earth, I mainly explore the abstraction of surface through collage and clay using found foliage. Working intuitively with mixed media layering and expressive mark making, my larger drawings seek to emphasise a flow of synergy between myself and the vast scenery. Meanwhile, my sculptures and installations are physical imprints of the land and contribute a sense of harmony and links across ecology.
Cairns have an ancient history in Scotland and were used as markers for travellers, signalling safe passage through treacherous terrain. As humans, we now find ourselves within the precipice of socio-ecological tipping points. The ‘cairn’ is a symbol of balance and this precarious imagery featured within my works supports the healing aspects of mindfulness towards wellbeing as well as promoting a deeper appreciation and connection to nature as this precious lifeline is evermore vulnerable to collapse.
