Two of our PGRs have been recognised as winners at this event, which aims to encourage PhD students in Scotland to reflect on and showcase the meaningful impact of their research.

Through the SGSSS (Scottish Graduate School of Social Science) Impact Competition, doctoral researchers can showcase the positive impact of their work on society and the economy. By participating, individuals can acquire valuable skills and recognise the impact of their research, while also having the chance to win £500 in follow-on funding.

Our Award-Winning Researchers

This year, the winner for Category 1: Planned Impact is Shona Shinwell from the School of Health Sciences, for her study on health outcomes following childbirth for women who use opioids. Highlighting the importance of administrative data studies, Shona's research showcases the potential to greatly enhance health outcomes for this group and shape effective healthcare policies and interventions.

In Category 2: Achieved Impact, Effie Marathia in Psychology from the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law, was shortlisted for her research on understanding unassisted smoking cessation. Effie's research offers important information for creating successful public health interventions to decrease smoking rates.

What is Impact?

Impact, as defined by ESRC and SGSSS, is the "demonstrable contribution of excellent research to society and the economy," including positive effects on various aspects through stakeholder engagement. It involves the progress of academic knowledge and scientific approaches in different fields.

We congratulate Shona and Effie on their remarkable achievements and their well-deserved recognition at the SGSSS Impact Awards.
