Fairtrade Policy

Updated on 18 March 2021

The University of Dundee assigns great importance to its role within the international community, and therefore is committed to supporting initiatives which promote and sustain various fairer trade alternatives

Part of this will be achieved by using and promoting products which have been certified by various labelling organisations within the FLO (Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International) as well as, where possible, supporting companies registered with the IFAT (International Fair Trade Association). These organisations aim to provide support through trade for marginalised farmers in the developing world by implementing and constantly reassessing standards regarding the workers rights on issues such as working conditions, wages, child labour and the environment.

In recognition of our efforts, the University of Dundee seeks to reach and maintain Fairtrade Status as outlined by the UK's Fairtrade Foundation. The criteria consists of 5 points and our commitment to them is as follows:

The Student Union and the University have worked together to create a fair-trade policy incorporating these 5 goals which are reviewed annually.

  • The Student Union and the University have continued to endorse Fairtrade through their policy statements (see above).

Fairtrade foods are made available for sale in all campus shops

  • Fairtrade foods are used in all cafes/restaurants/bars on campus. Fairtrade goods in the form of tea, coffee and chocolate are currently available in all campus shops.
  • All vending machines offer a Fairtrade tea, coffee and snack option. All university restaurants and cafes are stocked with various Fairtrade snacks in addition to tea and coffee.
  • The Student Union is supplied with Fairtrade coffee.
  • A Fairtrade alternative to other goods, such as cotton for University merchandise, is constantly being reviewed. The student union shop now stocks Fairtrade hoodies, t-shirts and bags.

Fairtrade foods (for example, coffee and tea) are served at all meetings hosted by the University and the Student Union, and are served in all University and Student Union management offices

  • Fairtrade tea and coffee is currently served at all University functions.
  • The Student Union is in the process of switching to serve Fairtrade goods where possible.

There is a commitment to campaign for increased Fairtrade consumption on campus

  • The Student Union and the University annually host a fortnight of campaigning and awareness-raising which coincides with the national Fairtrade fortnight.
  • The Fairtrade goods which are on sale are being advertised in the shops, in the Student Union and around the wider University Campus.
  • Various student societies have held campaigns and distributed literature across campus.

Set up a Fairtrade Steering Group

  • A staff/student steering group was set up in 2007 with the aim of monitoring consumption of Fairtrade goods on campus, continually re-assessing the situation and setting new targets.
