Learn about the comprehensive approach the University of Dundee takes to ensure the welfare of animals involved in research, and the staff working with them:

  • Refinements in procedures, housing, husbandry, and care
  • Focus on reducing severity
  • Access to, and sharing of, 3Rs information
  • Effective Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body
  • High quality reproducible science
  • Support from senior management
  • Support and training for staff
  • Caring and committed technical and research staff

The University:

  • Believes that good science requires good animal welfare.
  • Believes that everyone involved in research using animals should always show caring and respectful attitudes and behaviour towards them and to each other.
  • Believes that each person should take responsibility and be accountable in all aspects of animal care and use.
  • Will provide a supportive, inclusive and equality driven environment where concerns can be raised with confidence to promote the wellbeing of staff working with animals.
  • Will implement the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) as fully as possible, moving to non-animal methods wherever they can be used.
  • Will implement refined methods as they become available and will endeavour to provide animals with best practice housing conditions.
  • Will be open and transparent and will communicate the University of Dundee’s use of animals in research with the wider community.
