Effective political marketing should build positive connections with communities. Just as in business, parties and governments need to listen to their customers, or voters. Market research tools such as polling and focus groups helps politicians understand and respond to community needs. However the practice of political marketing in the 2019-2024 period did not always forge a positive connection between government and voters. Prof Jennifer Lees-Marshment,chair in Political Marketing and Management from the University of Dundee Business School, will lead a panel discussion of colleagues and practitioners to review the use of political marketing in the UK leading up to the 2024 election. Speakers will discuss both positive and problematic practices, consider increasing disconnections between politicians and the public, and lessons from this for Scottish political parties heading towards the 2026 election.
