Sandra's practice involves playing with different media to create a common narrative that crosses worlds, just like the experience of being in a multicultural environment. From a sologamy wedding to bedazzled vagina paintings to felt babies, she critiques the traditional values in Chinese society imposed by family bonds, represented by lucky knots made in rope. Reflecting how well-intentioned behaviour from family members ends up restricting and suffocating their children. Rebelling against these values as well as responding towards rejection from society because of her identity, she finds healing through materialising traumatic moments into objects of beauty, finding life in the rotting, genesis in death, and digesting grief into joy.

Zhang's film work lives in a state of reflection and conversations with themselves in Dundee. Keeping a physical distance from home brings emotional closeness to their family's behaviour and understanding. This is put on video through landscapes of Dundee and voiceovers of vulnerable truths. Combining all these multimedia pieces forms a body of work that narrates the perspective of the author as a human, hoping to relate to others, reaching out to find growth and evolution.

You watched me as I drowned...

Oil painting of two figures, one of them in fetal position inside a bedazzled bathtub, the other looking towards them.

You watched me as I drowned and I thought I was going to die but for a moment I felt alive and everything was so beautiful, though you were still pitiful and scary.

Birth life death

Bedazzled vaginas, oil painting triptych.

Human life often begins at the vagina, it is a symbol of genesis that deserves to be embellished at all stages of life, from birth to death.

You made me hate my body so I painted it...

Oil painting of naked person eating flower petals sat down with their legs spread.

You made me hate my body so I painted it and I ate the flowers you gave me, I'm planning on digesting them into joy.
