Itthon|Otthon: Two knitted textile collections, exploring the complex meaning of home through a combination of traditional and modern methods.

Growing up between two cultures, home for me was split across two countries. The title ‘Itthon/Otthon’ refers to two Hungarian words, the first meaning the home you’re currently at and the second meaning a home somewhere else. Traditionally ‘home’ is a place where a person lives or has grown up, but this project explores the complexity behind the meaning of the word ‘home’.

‘Itthon’ is inspired by my home in Scotland, it’s where I grew up and where I’ve spent most of my life and ‘Otthon’ is inspired by the house my mum grew up in in Hungary, where I spent most summers and feel a strong connection to. Both collections focus on designing textiles that create that feeling of being at ‘home’ using a contrast of traditional as well as modern methods to convey the shift from a conventional idea of home to one that is more complex and relates to a more diverse audience.
