An Exploration of Vibration

About

Profile photo of Caitlin Davidson

Music is often misunderstood as simply sound when it is in fact, vibrating energy. Not merely the vibration of sound but its cooperation with silent moments in rhythmic succession, communicating experience, environment, and emotion. A vibrational communication which leads us to find music everywhere. From bio-signals, the innate vibratory signature of any given object or being, creates the energetic music emitting from the entire material universe and all that it encompasses, redefining what music is and where it can be found, which allows us to reconsider the boundaries of musical therapies and their benefits.

My degree show features a collection of primarily metal spun designs, communicating a range of vibrational outputs depending on material, thickness, form and size, the aim of which is to evoke considerations of how we are listening and where vibrational communication may be found, subtly introducing the core concept of my research, what is music?
In my collection there are interactive musical pieces, however the focus is more on the variations in vibrational communication, touching on the universality of music’s reach, reflected in the adjustability of these pieces and encouraging viewer engagement.
