You Only Die Once, a funeral venue that celebrates life and death while considering the influence of tapestry, nature and funeral culture.

YODO (You Only Die Once) is an alternative funeral experience intended to foster a sense of festivity and ceremony. The proposed site is the Dutch Village located in the Craigtoun Country Park, only 5 minutes away from the town of St Andrews in Fife. The location is known for its lush greenery, tranquil ponds and scenic walking trails.
The design takes inspiration from the surrounding nature, exploring the symbolism and beauty of certain plant life. Also inspiring the design is the culture of death itself, how there are many different funeral and grieving traditions around the globe. Funerals are ceremonious celebrations in which storytelling and festivities are prominent, not only for those attending but also in honour of those we are remembering.
Current funeral options, such as a church service, can be considered outdated, especially for young people who pass. Just as weddings are a personal reflection of yourself, funerals should be treated the same, after all, you get one. An alternative venue that can cater to a large party of people, with both indoor and outdoor facilities. There are areas dedicated to having a good time and celebrating but also dedicated to emotional ceremonies, reflection and private grieving. While fun, the venue aims to provide a meaningful space for all, the dead and alive.
