Retrofitting the Stobswell Victorian Tenement for Modern Family Living

This project explores retrofit as a means to the spatial upgrade of Victorian tenements to accommodate modern living and the needs of low-income families with parents who work from home. Focusing on a Victorian tenement block within Stobswell West, which had been identified as likely to be affected by housing poverty, was a practical way to test spatial theories, aiming to find the balance between radical change and maintaining the much-loved features of a traditional tenement. It also related to our group master plan strategy, as the car park on the site would be removed in favour of community space like a play area - a perfect addition to family accommodation.
