The beauty of the Mundane: A collection of printed interior fabrics inspired by the overlooked marks and textures in our everyday surroundings.

About

Hannah Fallon

The focus of my project is to draw attention to the beauty within the mundane, by taking the often-overlooked marks and textures seen in our everyday environment and transforming them into a focal point. The visual inspiration is taken from locations I encounter within my immediate surroundings within Dundee. By observing things such as dappled light form tree branches, water marks, crackled marble and peeling paint with a new perspective. Inspiring the viewer to slow down and reflect in the subtle beauty in our surroundings.

“We often associate… beauty… with a majestic sunset, or an awe-inspiring mountain…by focusing on the more dramatic aspects of nature, we are only scratching the surface on the sheer extent of beauty which lies within the world”
-    Arnold Berleant.

The work is presented in two distinct contrasting collections for commercial interiors, ‘Dappled’ and ‘Broken stripe’

‘Dappled’ showcases the softer, delicate and organic marks of blurred and hazy shadows of light shining through branches and delicate enclosed marble in urban flowerpots and the spontaneously of raindrops and windscreens. Replicated through gentle layering of inky monoprint marks on sheer organdie in a monochrome colour palate to invoke a sense of tranquillity and reflection.

‘broken stripe’  In contrast  showcases the more ridged and structured marks in our surroundings of geometric stripes.

2m sheer organdie fabric sample featuring black and gold dappled marks all over in a repeat pattern.
3m broken stripe photo of fabric folded showing sections of the print, demonstrating a blue, yellow, black, maroon and turquoise stripe pattern with burnt away texture ontop.
