Designing to meet the demands of our hectic world will always be a challenge, but is it possible to design a typology to feed the world?

About

Architecture is the physical manifestation of response to stimuli, created in our everchanging world. Whether that stimulus is man-made or not is irrelevant, but what is relevant is how we respond to it. A major focus of my work is based on how we design for a future that has ever more strained natural resources - it has been widely recognised that the world population could reach as many as 10 billion by the year 2050, so how do we feed all these people? Even if all the forests of the globe were cut down and replaced with farmland, we still wouldn't have enough land to meet demand using traditional farming methods. So we must innovate and devise a new typology, which is why my thesis project focuses on developing a scalable and repeatable vertical farming prototype. Vertical farming allows for a greater quality and quantality of crops to be produced in a contrived environment, all on a vastly smaller foot when compared to traditional farming methods.
