Charge your electric car on campus

We have over twenty publicly accessible electric charging points on City Campus and the Botanic Gardens, with reduced price charging available for University staff and students.

Dundee is one of the best places in the UK to own an electric car, and as part of our commitment to greener travel many of our fleet vans and cars are now fully electric.

To support this our car parks now include 26 charging locations, with 20 of these available for public use.

Locations

Standard 32A chargers

Type 2, 7kW AC

  • 2x Heathfield multi-story car park
  • 12x Balfour Street
  • 2x Botanic Garden car park

Fast 50A chargers

Type 2, 22kW AC

  • 2x Park Place car park

Rapid 120A chargers

(Rapid chargers have three bays, with one of each socket type)

Type 2, 44kW Rapid
CCS, 43kW Rapid
CHAdeMO, 43kW Rapid

  • 1x Heathfield multi-story car park
  • 1x Old Estates Yard, Small's Wynd (North)

University vehicles only

The Type 2, 7kW AC chargers at the following locations are not for public use, and will not unlock with your app/card. Non-fleet vehicles parked in these bays may receive a Parking Charge.

  • 2x Tower Mailroom, Small's Wynd (South)
  • 2x Ewing Building, Small's Lane
  • 2x Harris Building, Peters Lane

How to charge your vehicle

Our chargers are part of the ChargePlace Scotland network, which includes over 2,286 chargers across Scotland (as of 2022).

Once you have registered for an account you can pay using:

  • iOS or Android app
  • WebPay mobile webpage
  • RFID access card

We recommend ordering an RFID access card as a backup in case your phone runs out of battery. The card costs £10 but this is added as credit to your account.

Charge point tariffs

  • Charge point tariffs
  • 35p per kWh (public)
  • 25p per kWh (registered staff or students)
  • minimum charge £2
  • plus a 50p connection fee

Standard and fast chargers (from Wednesday 1 May 2024)

  • 50p per kWh (public)
  • 40p per kWh (registered staff or students)
  • minimum charge £2
  • plus a 50p connection fee

Rapid chargers (from Wednesday 1 May 2024)

  • 55p per kWh (public)
  • 45p per kWh (registered staff or students)
  • minimum charge £2
  • plus a 50p connection fee

A £15 surcharge applies if you charge for:

  • more than three hours on a standard or fast charger
  • more than one hour on a rapid charger

Reduced price charging for staff / students

If you are a member of staff, or current student, you can use our public chargers at a cheaper rate.

Email Trudy Cunningham from your @dundee.ac.uk email with your ChargePlace Scotland account number to qualify for the discount.

  • If you had already registered before September 2022 you do not need to update your details.

Reserved electric parking for permit holders

Once you have charged your vehicle, University parking permit holders can use the 17 available spaces on Park Wynd to free up charging bays for other users.
