Whether your pregnancy was planned or unplanned, it’s understandable you will have lots of questions running through your mind about what happens next.

The NHS have guides on what to do first:

Student support for studying while pregnant

You can book an appointment with our Student Support Team to discuss your options and any concerns you may have.

It is also a good idea to let someone in your school know about your pregnancy. They may be able to ensure that any missed materials are provided to you and can also explain how to apply for an extension for assignments if you need it.

These are the types of things it would be good to discuss with your school:

  • pregnancy-related absence
  • adjustments for examinations or deadlines
  • maternity leave and return to study
  • risk assessments

If you are unable to attend classes because of your symptoms, you can self-certify without seeing your GP for the first 7 days of an absence.

If you are unwell and unable to take part in assessments or examinations, you should contact your advisor of study or lecturers as soon as possible to let them know. You may be able to apply for an extension by completing the mitigating circumstances form.

Temporary withdrawal

It may be possible for you to temporarily withdraw from your course to focus on your pregnancy. An advisor of study within your School can help you explore your options for taking a break and returning to study later.

If you are an International Student, you can contact our International Advice Service for guidance around taking a temporary withdrawal and how this may impact your visa.

Financial support

There is the Higher Education Childcare Fund and discretionary funds available.

You can speak with the Student Funding team for advice on your options.

Considering an abortion (termination of pregnancy)

Terminating a pregnancy can be a very emotional and traumatic experience. There are services available to help you decide what you would like to do and support you through this time.
