Install the SafeZone app on your mobile

Updated on 30 August 2024

SafeZone will be used to communicate with our University community in an emergency. Users will also be able to check in if they feel unsafe or are lone working

On this page

SafeZone is a free app that is available to our staff and students. The app enables location-based communication, either from the University or from the user. It does so to alert when there is a specific incident or when someone needs help.

Situations where the app might be used to send alerts to our University community include:

  • an emergency situation on campus
  • adverse weather warnings
  • building or road closures
  • gas leaks or electricity failures

Situations where individuals might use the app to request help include:

  • checking in when lone-working or working outside normal hours
  • checking in when travelling on business (including international travel)
  • when a first aider is required
  • reporting an incident or safety concern on campus

Download and set up the app

  1. Download from Google Play or the App Store (search SafeZone)
  2. Enter your University of Dundee email address
  3. Log in with your University of Dundee credentials on the single sign on screen. This should pre-populate your email address, name and surname.
  4. Provide your mobile number (mandatory) and photo (optional) and tap Sign Up.

Once signed up, the app will ask you to review permissions. This will include allowing the app access to:

  • your location
  • your phone's Bluetooth functionality
  • display notifications (so you can receive emergency alerts)

If you have any issues with installation, you can check the SafeZone troubleshooting pages.

How to use the SafeZone app

The app, which is monitored 24 hours a day by our Security team, enables you to request help in different ways depending on the situation.

A closeup photo of an iPhone showing the SafeZone main interface. From top to bottom, there is a University logo with a menu icon to its left. On the next row are icons for "See it? Say it?", "Check in timer", and "Check in". There is then a large narrow button for "Well being assistance", then half width buttons for "First Aid" and "Non-Urgent". Finally at the bottom is a full width red button for "emergency"

To request First Aid assistance: Tap the green First Aid button and make a request via chat or call. Security will then locate the first aider nearest to you and alert them to your request.

In a non-emergency: Tap the blue Non-Urgent button to be connected to Security via chat or call.

In an emergency: Tap the red Emergency button to be connected to Security via chat or call or call 999 directly. Security will also be alerted when you call 999.

Other features you can use include:

Check In: Tap the Check In button when you’re on campus so that Security know you’re onsite and safe – particularly if you are lone working or on campus out of your regular hours. Remember to check out by using the same button when you leave campus.

Check In Timer: Tap the Check In Timer button if you are lone working – if you fail to extend or cancel it, our Security team will check up on you to make sure you are OK.

Reporting safety issues: Tap the See It? Say It! button to report a non-emergency issue. This includes assault, abuse and harassment, disturbances, mental health, suspicious activity, theft, and vandalism. You can report anonymously, but if you do, our team will not be able to follow up with you directly, and may not be able to make individuals aware of any complaint made against them.

Wellbeing Assistance: Tap this to be taken to a list of resources to support you with your mental health.
