Module code

CM50160

The aim of the module is to develop and consolidate students’ understanding/interpretation of simulation to promote and support its application in healthcare education and practice.

This module contains a virtual week of activities that you are expected to attend online. These will run in week 6 of the presentation. For further details, please email cmecourses@dundee.ac.uk

By the end of this module, students should be able to:

  • Analyse critically educational theories in relation to simulation based education and assessment
  • Appraise critically the evidence for the use of simulation for healthcare education and safe practice
  • Evaluate critically approaches to feedback and debriefing in simulation education and assessment
  • Create, deliver and critique a simulation learning event relevant to their education and/or clinical context
  • Reflect critically on the use of simulation in enhancing safe practice in their healthcare workplace

In this module you will learn, develop and consolidate your understanding and interpretation of simulation-based education and promote and support its application in your healthcare education and practice context.

What you will learn

In this module, you will learn:

  • the theoretical basis of simulation, including the educational theories which underpin the learning and assessment activities using simulation
  • the evidence base for the use of simulation to enhance safe healthcare practice
  • the classification of simulators and the diverse application of these to simulation events
  • the development of intended learning outcomes for simulation events
  • the facilitation and immersion of simulation activities
  • the nature and art of feedback and debrief in simulation
  • how to design, develop, and implement a simulation based learning event and so enhance your confidence and competence in the use of simulation for education, assessment in healthcare practice

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • analyse critically educational theories in relation to simulation based education and assessment
  • appraise critically the evidence for the use of simulation for healthcare education and safe practice
  • evaluate critically approaches to feedback and debriefing in simulation education and assessment
  • create, deliver and critique a simulation learning event relevant to their educational and/or clinical context
  • reflect critically on the use of simulation in enhancing safe practice in their healthcare workplace

Assignments / assessment

The summative assessment is 100% coursework

  • a Critical essay 3,000 words (75%)
    • You will critically analyse the simulation literature and evidence base relevant to a planned simulation activity which you developed for your workplace/practice
  • a Reflective essay 1,000 words (25%)
    • You will critically reflect upon your role as an educator in facilitating simulation in your workplace/practice

Teaching methods / timetable

  • A weekly schedule of topics, supported by a reading list
  • Contributing to discussion forums and responding to posts by fellow students, moderated by tutors
  • Listening to pre-recorded lectures by tutors
  • Podcasts and webinars from guest speakers
  • Live and interactive tutor-led tutorials which are a hybrid of online to allow for students who attend in-person and online
  • Interactive workshops which are delivered in-person and can be joined online
  • You will participate in designing and critically analysing simulation activities with other students in small groups
