Data visualisation is the representation of data and information in a visual format, such as charts, graphs, maps, and infographics. It is a way to communicate complex data in a clear and concise manner, making it easier to understand and interpret.

By using effective data visualisation, you can convey a narrative and highlight your key messages using data storytelling. Throughout the module, you will explore how effective different types of data and charts are. You will also work with analysis and presentation tools and explore how you can use programming for data visualisation.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • understand the definition of data and different data types
  • learn how to gather data effectively
  • study techniques for basic data analysis and create descriptive statistics
  • look at the importance of key messages and storytelling in data presentation
  • examine different chart types to present data
  • learn how to use industry standard analysis and presentation tools
  • explore data visualisation programming

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate your understanding of different data types and how they can be recorded effectively
  • analyse different data types correctly
  • create data visualisation sketches to communicate a message
  • implement interactive data visualisations using modern web technologies
  • critically reflect on contextual data tools presented in research papers

Assignments / assessment

  • weekly quiz (30%)
  • paper discussion (20%)
  • data visualisation web tool (50%)

This module does not have a final exam.
