Learn about the fundamental aspects of Art & Design practice. You will develop your perceptual, technical and expressive skills. This will be done through working with a range of media, materials and processes.

You will gain experience in studio and personal practice. You will also learn about a range of objects, concepts, visual artefacts and performances. This will develop your awareness of visual and material culture.

The module's subject is 'drawing'. You will explore the role drawing plays within the acts of observation, recording, ideation, and creation.

The project brief asks you to explore the activity of Drawing for various purposes such as:

  • in different settings
  • with various materials
  • at differing scales

The module project will allow you to practice and expand your technical skills.

You will also be introduced to the creative process of keen observation and recording of visual material. This is fundamental to many Art College practices and disciplines. You will later use this process to create innovative works of art and design.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • draw from an observational and academic view, from life models and objects
  • be introduced to linear and volumetric space, form, tone and proportion structure, weight and movement
  • show the ways initial studies and explorations inform later outcomes
  • develop your self-critical practice
  • learn the appropriate standards of presentation and documentation
  • understand Art & Media and Design history, theory and practice

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • use a wide range of materials and media with confidence
  • understand contemporary art and design and their social, historical and theoretical context
  • show evidence of your engagement and reflection

  • coursework (100%)

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

This module is practical and you will be based in one of our studios for its duration.

You will have your own workspace and have access to materials and equipment.

You can also source additional interesting and inexpensive materials to support your studies.

You will have daily studio contact time with staff for one-to-one teaching.

Your individual tutorials will be supplemented with occasional group tutorials.

You will undertake personal study and research.
