This module is one that all students on the course undertake in the first semester. Along with modules DJ11001 and DJ11002, it offers a broad introduction to a key aspect of the study of Art & Design. Each of these Semester 1 modules is distinctly different and has a specific focus.

This module has a single project within it. Abundant supporting material to encourage and develop practical project work and effective research is provided, along with a written brief and a verbal and visual introduction at the beginning of the module.

This three-week long project asks you to consider the associations, interpretations, and complexity of colour. You will be encouraged to think broadly about the meaning, theory, and history of colour and how its application can impact the outcome, going beyond the merely 'colourful'.

You will study examples of how artists and designers use colour in their work. The language of colour and what it can communicate and express for both designers and artists will be considered. You will approach this in an open and explorative manner.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • expand your capabilities in the practical applications of colour
  • learn how to mix pigments effectively
  • analyse how colour can influence and inform visual practice in both art and design

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • present a final piece on colour related to a particular field of art and design practice (for example: a painting, a poster, a dimensional work, or a piece of pattern suitable for a textile design.)
  • develop your work in a way that reflects individual interests and study over the course of the module

Assignments / assessment

Final Assessment (100%)

  • Given week 9
  • Due week 12
  • 200 hours expected effort

You will have been documenting your physical artwork photographically throughout the module. This will be presented as a 10-page pdf document containing images and accompanying text.

Advice on submitting your work will be given at the start of the module and clear details about your final assessment submission will also be communicated to you.

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

The module will take place during weeks 9, 10, and 11 of Semester 1. A full timetable will be provided at the start of the academic year.

The Module will be held in the General Foundation studios each week; Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (self-study), and Friday from 9am to 5pm. This module is a practical one and you will be based in one of our studios for its duration. You will have your own workspace and have access to materials and equipment and are encouraged to bring with you a range of mixable pigments such as paints and inks, and some coloured paper.

You will have daily studio contact time with staff for one-to-one teaching and be encouraged to undertake personal study and research and take responsibility for your own learning. Participation is crucial in individual and group tutorials, as well as a mandatory introductory lecture. You will be advised of your personal timetable prior to the module’s commencement.
