This module focuses on the global context in which designers and makers operate. The core of the module discusses the concept of sustainability and asks: What needs to change? Why? How can designers & makers contribute to such changes?

You will look at sustainability as the Art of Longevity. You will also look at how Craft & Design can contribute to the changes that need to take place for a better, more equal, just, and sustainable society.

As a starting point, the module will cover some of the greatest challenges humanity is currently facing. It will also cover:

  • the meaning of the concept of 'sustainability' and its many ramifications
  • the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs)

You will also explore some of the conceptual and practical links between craft, design, and sustainability.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • design a project from start to finish
  • learn how to locate sources/readings as you need
  • undertake secondary research
  • prepare a PowerPoint and oral presentation
  • present your ideas in writing
  • develop teamwork skills

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand the scope and challenges of sustainability and the role designers and makers have in it
  • appreciate the relationships between craft and design. You will also appreciate the wider culture within which makers and designers operate
  • challenge and widen conventional understandings of creative practice. You will be able to challenge its role in contemporary society
  • reflect critically on your own creative practice
  • engage critically with a variety of readings and other sources
  • feel confident with expressing your ideas in writing
  • explore and define a personal design vision
  • work well with others towards a common goal

Assignments / assessment

  • written assignment (50%)
  • group presentation (30%)
  • digital presentation (20%)

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

You will learn by taking a hands-on approach. This will involve taking part in seminars and workshop sessions.

Guest speakers will deliver lectures throughout the course. You will also take part in one external visit to V&A Dundee.
