You will get an overview of past and present artistic practices. This will be through a structured programme of lectures.

Some lectures will give a historical overview of specific artistic disciplines. Others will provide analytical frameworks for understanding and evaluating artistic practices.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • continue to develop your understanding of recent visual art, media, and related practices. This will be in the wider visual cultural and research context
  • continue the exploration of ideas and issues in critical and contextual study
  • embed the relationship between critical and contextual thinking into creative practice
  • develop your ability to research, analyse, and contextualise objects of study. You will also learn to express your ideas, orally and in writing

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • enhance your understanding of the concept of ‘visual culture’. This will be in relation to art and media practice, and in wider social, cultural, and research contexts
  • increase your awareness of the relationship between:
    • the development of art and media creative practices
    • research
    • concurrent social and economic developments
  • understand the relationships between audiences and producers of contemporary art and media practices
  • understand particular art and media forms and genres. You will also understand the way in which they organize knowledge, meanings, and effects
  • enhance your study skills. This will enable your independent study and research. You will also get used to using a range of different media, study methods, and reference sources
  • engage with the management and fluent deployment of historical and theoretical knowledge
  • critically assess contemporary source material, including media information sources
