You will get an initial understanding of effective learning and teaching in Scottish primary schools.

You will be introduced to the core principles and practices within the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. This module will help you prepare for your professional placements.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • understand the changing nature, philosophy, potential learning, and teaching approaches for each curricular area. You will also learn about the contributions they make to the development of pupils’ literacy, numeracy, and health and wellbeing
  • understand learning through an integrated approach such as the International Baccalaureate Pathway
  • learn the principles that make up the curriculum and knowledge of the eight curricular areas for primary schools
  • learn how to access appropriate curricular resources and begin to assess their worth
  • access and use appropriate professional literature relating to the primary curriculum

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • understand what effective learning and teaching looks like in the primary classroom
  • have an overview of how teaching is conducted for a number of topics such as Languages, Mathematics, Social Subjects, Expressive Arts, Technologies, Health and Wellbeing, Science, and Religious and Moral Education
