This module is split into two parts:

  • Part 1 - theory and practice of education (on campus)
  • Part 2 - four-week professional practice in the P4-7 stage (on placement)

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • be introduced to educational psychology. This will cover learning, motivation, language, physical development
  • explore the fundamentals of child development
  • learn about atypical development
  • gain knowledge of key contributions in the area of educational psychology
  • learn strategies for short-term planning, teaching and assessing learning for classes, groups and individuals
  • strategies for effective classroom organisation and management in the primary classroom
  • learn the primary school curriculum, concerning national priorities and guidance
  • reflect and conduct self-evaluation through links between professional and/or academic reading and practice

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand of the development of theory and practice
  • assess learning that meets the needs of pupils
  • access and use appropriate academic and professional literature relating to theories explored
  • show the ability to self-evaluate and draw on relevant principles, perspectives and theories to inform next steps and set appropriate targets for future development.
  • manage and organise groups, class and individual learning activities
  • use effective communication skills appropriate for the stage of Professional Practice
  • use techniques to encourage and manage pupil behaviour fairly, sensitively and consistently within the class
  • show professionalism throughout Professional Practice
  • create an inclusive environment

Assignments / assessment

  • Placement (100%)

You will be assessed summatively by both a university tutor and the school. You will be assessed with an overall grade of satisfactory or unsatisfactory. This will be against the areas of the Standards for Provisional Registration (SPR).

This module does not have a final exam.
