Learning for Sustainability (LfS) is an entitlement for all learners within Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence (CfE). It has a strong focus within the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) Professional Standards.

Teachers have a responsibility to use learning approaches that will support pupils in tackling challenging or complex issues. Learning for Sustainability allows them to do this.

You will develop your understanding of LfS. This will be done through a critical examination of classroom practice.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • gain an understanding of LfS within CfE
  • gain an understanding of educational philosophy and values
  • understand active and participatory methods and practices
  • learn how to develop critical thinking
  • learn how to promote learner agency

By the end of the module you will be able to:

  • show knowledge and understanding of LfS
  • justify practical decisions through a critical reflection of educational policy. Philosophy and professional values will also contribute.
  • show awareness of you and others’ roles. You will understand the responsibilities and contributions as a student teacher

Assignments / assessment

  • 2,000 word essay (100%)

This module does not have a final exam
