Learning beyond subject boundaries is an engaging and effective approach to learning and teaching. As a topic, however, it is also complex and at times poorly defined.

In this module, you will explore the differences and similarities between the theoretical perspectives and approaches to learning beyond subject boundaries.

You will cover topics such as interdisciplinary learning and transdisciplinary learning. You will get to put these topics into a more informed and critical perspective.

You will learn how to apply this learning via workshops, taught examples, and lectures. This will help you develop the confidence to take this approach into the classroom.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • learn about different theoretical perspectives regarding learning beyond subject boundaries. This will include key strengths, complexities, and criticisms
  • explore contemporary examples of learning beyond subject boundaries. You will also explore the contribution that the Curriculum for Excellence curricular areas can make therein. This will also include a permeating approach to Health & Wellbeing, Literacy, and Numeracy
  • study examples of effective planning and professional practices. These will lead to successful learning within the context of learning beyond subject boundaries. This will further develop opportunities to apply your learning within classroom practice

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • show a broad and integrated knowledge and understanding of the nature of the curriculum and its development
  • show the ability to draw on a breadth of relevant principles, perspectives, and theories. These will inform your professional values and practices
  • show a broad understanding of research and its contribution to education
  • show a critical knowledge and understanding of the principles that underpin the curriculum and knowledge of curricular areas for primary schools. You will also be able to show an understanding of the permeating approach to Health & Wellbeing, Literacy and Numeracy
  • show a detailed knowledge and a critical understanding of teaching approaches for each curricular area and cross-cutting themes

Assignments / assessment

  • 8–10 minute Viva presentation and 10-15 minute discussion (100%)
