You will learn the knowledge and skills to further enhance their development as reflective and effective members of the teaching profession.

It will also further develop your understanding of the role of the classroom teacher. This will include a focus on the early years class as well as the wider school. This will focus on:

  • a clear knowledge and understanding of the nursery/Primary 1-3 curriculum
  • competency to plan for appropriate learning
  • appropriate approaches to effective teaching and learning in the nursery/Primary 1-3 classroom
  • the principal theories and concepts relating to professional practice

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • understand the curriculum and relating it to relevant policy and international models
  • learn the principles and role of play in learning
  • learn the principles of early childhood education and appropriate learning and teaching approaches
  • understand inclusive practice including issues relating to nurture and attachment
  • acknowledge the role of the teacher/adult within the early years setting
  • become adept at collaboration and interdisciplinary working in relation to transition and partnerships
  • plan, observe, assess and assess, and how this is structured in Nursery/Primary 1-3
  • recognise risk, challenge, personalisation, and relevance as key principles within education
  • learn the links between professional reading and practice. This include the professional role of the teacher
  • understand issues relating to child protection
  • use current research and policy to inform practice

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • show a critical understanding of the nursery/P1-P3 curriculum. You will be able to show particular focus on the curriculum and its development
  • show a critical understanding of relevant elements of management within the class. You will also be able to show the importance of this on collaborative practice
  • show an enhanced ability to implement medium-term planning, cross-curricular approaches and appropriate assessment techniques for effective teaching
  • show a broad and critical understanding of the principal features of early education and educational policy
  • show an informed knowledge and understanding of current national educational priorities
  • show an ability to critically assess professionally relevant literature for continuing professional development
