This module will help you learn how to critically evaluate psychological research methodology and outcomes. You will learn how to communicate research findings and ideas to patients or professionals, as well as teaching you valuable skills for your own research dissertation.

What you will learn

In this module, you will learn:

  • how to communicate research findings and ideas to patients, to colleagues and to other audiences
  • the methodological and statistical principles of psychological research and their relevance to evidence-based outcomes  
  • how to critically evaluate psychological research methodology and outcomes  
  • how to carry out clinical audits or relevant projects  
  • how to carry out a competent systematic review of scientific literature  

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand the concepts of power, effect size and significance and apply these when performing a systematic review
  • use your statistical knowledge to evaluate published research and draw valid inferences about the implications for current clinical practice  
  • assist colleagues with conducting clinically meaningful research 
  • present the results of research in a clear and concise manner, in oral and written formats  
  • this module should support knowledge and skills to present case-reports in a critical, reflective, and concise manner (Modules 1, 2, & 3) 
  • this module should support knowledge and skills to produce a systematic review or service-related project on a clinical topic (Module 6) 

Assignments / assessment

essay - 3,000 words (100%)

  • this will assess your knowledge of core statistical principles and methodology of psychological research and its relevance to evidence-based practice.
