This module will help you understand the law on the development and use of pharmaceutical products and the legal regulation of pharmaceutical product development. The module also addresses legal mechanisms for individuals impacted by adverse effects of pharmaceuticals and the legal responsibilities of product manufacturers and healthcare professionals.

What you will learn

In this module you will:

  • develop your analytical skills
  • develop skills for discussion of legal and ethical issues
  • learn about pharmaceutical product liability within different branches of law
  • understand the particular laws and tests that can be applied in the pharmaceutical sector, and how to discuss and write about them
  • discover the legal obligations owed to customers and patients from drug companies and healthcare professionals

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • analyse, discuss and apply legal and ethical principles to drug development and the testing of new drugs
  • understand which legal principles are applied to the pharmaceutical sector
  • confidently discuss and write about laws and tests which can apply in this sector
  • have an understanding of the legal mechanisms available for those negatively affected by pharmaceuticals

Module has 6 components:

  1. Ethical issues in drug trials 
  2. Legal regulation of the manufacture and marketing of drugs 
  3. The supply of drugs by pharmacists. 
  4. The supply of drugs by doctors, and nurse prescribing 
  5. Vaccine damage compensation schemes 
  6. A critique of the UK law 

An understanding of each is checked using a formative or summative assignment that is either an online test or a piece of written work.

This module does not have a final exam.
