This module helps you to build on and consolidate the academic, professional and digital capabilities that are needed for studying at Degree level and to become a registered nurse.

What you will learn

In this module you will:

  • develop your understanding of evidence-based practice (EBP) and healthcare research
  • explore the complexities associated with improving quality and safety in the healthcare environment

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • analyse the opportunities and challenges of quality improvement and patient safety 
  • reflect on the role of the newly qualified practitioner in ensuring continuous quality improvement and patient safety 
  • undertake and reflect on the role of the nurse in the interprofessional arena
  • demonstrate the ability to undertake detailed analysis and assessment of and evaluate a range of evidence related to nursing practice 
  • appraise critically the role of the nurse in the context of professional standards and protection of the public

Assignments / assessment

  • 4 Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) online courses in quality and safety or equivalent (pass/fail)
  • Multiple Choice Questions on academic skills and evidence-based care (50%)
  • Multiple Choice Questions on professionalism (50%)

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

The module runs in semester 1 for 6 weeks, in semester 2 for 6 weeks and again at the end of semester 2 for 4 weeks.

There are taught face-to-face tutorials, usually run weekly.
