This is an intensive French language course. It is for learners with some prior intensive study of French (PF11001/PF12002 Applied French 1A/1B or equivalent)

You will master the main structures of the French language. You will learn to recognise key features of selected French-speaking cultures. You will be able to communicate competently in French. This will allow you to communicate in formal and informal situations of increasing complexity.

This learning will be of use to you both in your personal and professional lives. You will work within the level of A2 of the Common European Framework for Languages and within the selected skills area of B1.

You will communicate competently across the four language skills. These are listening, speaking, reading and writing. You will do so through learning the main vocabulary and grammatical structures of French.

Examples of topics are:

  • education and student life
  • business and employment
  • geography
  • regional differences

What will you learn

In this module, you will:

  • recognise, understand, and apply competently the main vocabulary and grammatical structures of French
  • develop your skills in reading comprehension
  • develop proficiency in using a concise bilingual English - French dictionary
  • use a wide range of printed, audio-visual, and web-based resources appropriately
  • show familiarity with contemporary French-speaking societies and cultures. You will also learn the awareness of the differences between customs and conventions in these societies and those in the UK
  • listen to, read, speak, and write French effectively in a range of increasingly complex social and work-related contexts
  • use language skills at a level of A2 and selected skill areas of B1, as described in the Common European Framework (CEFR)

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • master the main structures of French across the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • recognize many key features of selected French-speaking cultures
  • communicate competently in informal and formal situations of increasing complexity
  • show proficient use of a bilingual dictionary
  • competently apply grammatical and lexical structures

If passed together with Applied French 2B, this module would support entry to Honours level French.

To pass the module, both the total written and oral components of the coursework must be passed.

This module does not have a final exam.
