You will master thoroughly the main structures of the Spanish language, be fully familiar with many key features of selected Spanish-speaking cultures and communicate competently in Spanish in a wide range of formal and informal situations of increasing complexity. This learning will be of use to you both in your personal and professional lives. You will work within the level of B1 of the Common European Framework for Languages and within selected skills area of B2.

Through recognising, understanding, and applying the main vocabulary and grammatical structures of Spanish, you will communicate competently across the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Examples of topics are environment and tourism, media and publicity, historical events, and political structures.

What will you learn

In this module, you will:

  • recognise, understand, and apply the more complex features of the Spanish language system
  • use new technology appropriately in language learning
  • use a concise bilingual English - Spanish dictionary effectively
  • conduct independent investigation and project work in Spanish, using a range of printed, audio-visual, and web-based resources
  • show increased familiarity with contemporary Spanish-speaking societies and cultures, and awareness of differences between customs and conventions and those of the UK
  • listen to, read, speak, and write Spanish effectively in a range of increasingly complex social and work-related contexts
  • use language skills at a level of B1 and selected skill areas of B2, as described in the Common European Framework (CEFR)

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • master thoroughly the main structures of Spanish across the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing
  • demonstrate increased familiarity with many key features of selected Spanish-speaking cultures
  • demonstrate competence in the more complex features of the Spanish language across the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • communicate competently in Spanish in a wide range of informal and formal situations of increasing complexity
  • demonstrate proficient use of a bilingual dictionary
  • competently apply grammatical and lexical structures

If passed, this module would support entry to Honours level Spanish.

  • coursework (75%)

  • examination (25%): consisting of one 10-minute oral degree exam

To pass the module, both aggregate written and aggregate oral components of the assessment portfolio (i.e. written 50%; oral 50%) must be passed.
