This module will introduce you to the structure of social work in Scotland. This includes statutory, voluntary and third-sector social work.

You will learn about the uniqueness of Scottish social work. This includes the key systems and structures. You will learn about key debates such as care and control, thresholds and the role of the media.

You will also learn about the importance of written communication in the social work profession.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • learn about the structures of social work in Scotland

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • explain the structure and contexts of social work in Scotland
  • discuss the contested nature of social work practice
  • identify the unique features of Scottish social work.
  • recognise the influence of the media on social work
  • explain that uncertainty is part of social work and articulate the functions of social work
  • show professional writing skills for social work and integrate literature within your learning

Assignments / assessment

  • 1,000-word annotated bibliography (50%)
    • this will be of a selection of the academic references used in the subsequent essay
  • 1,000-word essay (50%)
    • this will be on a key issue from the module

This module does not have a final exam.
