Gain an awareness and understanding of the various factors that influence the character of the countryside. Learn about the different roles needed in planning and management plus possible interventions for the conservation and enhancement of the countryside.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • develop your understanding of the countryside, its features and activities
  • learn about the different strategies used in the planning and management of the countryside
  • gain an awareness of the range stakeholders involved in the planning and management of the countryside.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • present and evaluate problems, opportunities and challenges for the countryside including the use of landscape assessment approaches
  • prepare and present well-structured professional reports
  • deliver basic presentations and develop listening skills
  • use initiative and independence when carrying out tasks.

Assignments / assessment

  • group report - 4,000 words (40%)
  • group presentation - 10 minutes (10%)
  • individual essay - 2,000 words (50%)

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

You should expect weekly lectures with occasional guest speakers, plus workshops that will allow you to work within your groups.
