Through scenario based learning, debate and workshops you will develop a broad understanding of principles and application of planning law and an understanding of the factors which influence and shape development plans and strategies.

Undertake a practical understanding of the statutory plan making processes in urban and regional planning is developed.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • develop a critical understanding of both the principles and practice by working in small teams to prepare development plan strategies
  • understand how the decision making process of development is undertaken.
  • gain perspectives in both public and private sector planning as well as the impact this has on different communities

By the end of this module, you will:

  • have a critical understanding of the basis of planning law and its role in regulating and managing development
  • a detailed knowledge of the development plan making process
  • a critical understanding of how strategy is evaluated and developed in plan making
  • gain practical skills in the ability to interpret and apply land use policy and regulation
  • be able to analyse and synthesise a range of factors, in evaluating alternative solutions to real-world problems
  • have further enhanced your teamwork and problem-solving skills in a professional context
  • be able to effectively communicate complex ideas within an illustrated report
  • have further enhanced your digital skills

Assignments / assessment

  • Group place plan (50%)
  • Individual online, timed, scenario based assessment (50%)

Teaching methods / timetable

  • lectures which are held in person, on campus, with occasional online sessions to support talks by invited speakers
  • workshops that are held in person and can include some off-campus visits to undertake fieldwork.
