In this course you will learn about the historical development of cities and how the process is influenced by political and big ideas. You will learn about the range of such ideas and how these ideas change over time as they are influenced by learned experiences.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • gain knowledge of the history of urban development
  • learn how different political ideas shaped the development of cities in the UK
  • learn the historical development of big ideas that explain different approaches to shaping cities
  • understand the changing nature of decision-making in shaping cities and the role of the public
  • consider how social justice issues and human rights influences the development of cities

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • explain the historical development of cities from the past to the present
  • discuss the various theories that explain the different ideas that explain how cities are shaped
  • identify key change moments that defined urban planning practice in the UK
  • explain how key concepts that explain the growth of cities persistently change their meaning
  • understand how different and, at times, conflicting ideas are negotiated in shaping urban and rural areas
  • understand the changing roles played by urban planners in shaping cities
