Gain insight to the concepts and methods of visual and economic analysis, learning about the relationships between the key factors critical in spatial planning (visual space, distance, time, activities and flows, resources, development interests and social values, impacts).

You will develop your visual and cognitive understanding of the principles of design in the context of the urban place. You will undertake appraisals to develop your capacity to analyse urban design. Case studies and practical exercises are used to highlight the importance of area and site appraisals related to the development process.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • familiarise yourself with a range of research tools to support urban design and planning
  • learn how to analyse and interpret the social and economic processes that contribute to shaping urban settlements
  • explore the core techniques for the visual appreciation of places

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • frame integrated and well-substantiated research responses to spatial planning and design challenges
  • utilise knowledge of the principles and processes of design for creating high-quality places
  • utilise knowledge of urban theory and social science methodologies relevant to analysing social and economic aspects of urban settlement
  • use research, analytical, evaluative, and appraisal skills, and the ability to make an informed interpretation of evidence

Assignments / assessment

  • illustrated report of 3,500 words (100%)
