This course introduces you to the complexity of developing buildings and infrastructure in cities. You will learn about the different roles that are involved and the nature of challenges encountered in achieving successful development of projects. The objectives of property developers and processes involved are to be explored. Understanding how property is developed is essential for those responsible for shaping and managing the built and natural environment.

What will you learn?

In this module, you will:

  • learn how different organisations are involved in developing major buildings and projects
  • understand how the town planning profession supports and manages development ideas
  • gain knowledge of the varied interests that different players seek to achieve in the development of property and infrastructure
  • understand the nature of uncertainty that characterises the processes involved in the development of major projects
  • learn methods of anticipating and managing uncertainty and its impact on the success of developing major projects

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • have a detailed understanding of the role of key players that influence the successful development of major projects
  • develop an appreciation of the importance of early consideration of factors before the start of project development by consideration of a range of relevant factors
  • have gained knowledge of the influence of the statutory urban planning guidance on the success of the development of major projects
  • be able to identify characteristics of successful projects
  • develop appropriate methods to evaluate the success of major projects and to explain the reasons for project success or failure
