In this module, you will gain an understanding of planning legislation and the main functions of planning. You will learn how to interpret and apply both legislation and procedures in practice including planning policy and planning application decision making.

You will gain an understanding of required professional competencies and develop professional skills through reflective practice. You will develop the ability to work in trans-disciplinary group work to help build resilience and develop collaborative skills.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • develop your understanding of the purposes of spatial planning and the contribution of statutory planning powers and procedures
  • develop your understanding of spatial planning in different contexts and across a range of planning issues
  • gain professional practice skills including analytical and decision-making skills, negotiation, mediation, and communication skills

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • appreciate how statutory planning powers and procedures contribute to the protection, development, and management of the built environment
  • critically understand the planning policy and its application
  • understand the range and complexity of current planning issues and their impacts
  • develop your intellectual abilities to understand public policy making and its interpretation in decision-making
  • gain skills in desk-based research, site investigation, team work, and report writing skills including reflective practice

Assignments / assessment

The module is assessed through 100% coursework:

  • Group Place Strategy/Place Plan: 5,000 word illustrated group report (50%)
  • Reflexive Professional submission: 2,000-3,000 word reflective essay (50%)

This module does not have a final exam.
