Biography

Madhavi is from India and currently working as an Associate Tutor in the Division of Education and Society within the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law (SHSL) at the University of Dundee. Madhavi graduated with a distinction in MEd in Leading Learning and Teaching in January 2023.

About Madhavi

While currently working as an Associate Tutor at the University of Dundee, I am also a Research Assistant on two different research projects. As an international student, I am especially passionate about issues of student support, well-being, and experience. Since starting at the university, I've been actively involved in several student support and wellbeing initiatives as a class representative, International Student Ambassador (with SHSL student recruitment and experience, International), Associate Tutor, and member of the BME network. Liaison with school leaders on time ensured amicable mitigation of challenges and optimisation of student learning and overall experience. I was also a member of the team that developed student awareness resources about academic misconduct. As a Parent Employment Support (PES) Mentor with Project Scotland, I get to work with underprivileged parents and their children to make Scotland more inclusive.

My career spans more than two decades and includes research, teaching (Chemistry), and various leadership roles in secondary and higher education in India. It instilled in me resilience, a commitment to equality, inclusion, and diversity values, and collaborative skills that allow me to connect with people compassionately.  I like talking to people, listening to their stories, and learning about different cultures. It truly humbles me when people thank me for the difference my small contribution has made in their lives. As I pursue a teaching and research career in higher education, I hope to continue contributing to student support, wellbeing, and experience at the University of Dundee. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, writing, nature walks, travelling to new and remote locations, photography, cooking, and daydreaming, among other things.

Reason for becoming an alumni ambassador

I received generous support, encouragement, and motivation from everyone at the University. Receiving the Bridge Alumni Award 2023 for Outstanding Support as a Recent Graduate and being shortlisted for Outstanding Support to Students was one of the most moving experiences for me. One year as a mature student at the University of Dundee has reinforced my confidence in my capabilities and passion for learning. I'd like to fulfil my responsibility now by contributing to the outstanding work that the University is doing to ensure that the privilege and joy of learning are truly accessible to all. Being an Alumni Ambassador for the University will be my 'Gurudakshina' as an indebted student.

*The Gurudakshina is a very ancient Indian tradition to offer with reverence, something of value, to one's 'Guru' or 'Teacher' or towards his/her cause in recognition of the invaluable knowledge imparted to the student (Chinmayadc.org).
