Biography

Wasana is from Sri Lanka and studied MEd Leading, Learning and Teaching in our School of Education and Social Work, graduating in 2022.

About Wasana

My hobbies and interest include reading, watching scientific and historical documentaries and travelling – I have many places on my ‘bucket list.’ I am also a great ‘foodie’ so I enjoy trying different kinds of foods with my family and friends. I am quite a good cook and love to explore different recipes in the kitchen.

Career-wise, over the last fifteen years, I have worked in different education entities in different education managerial roles. I started my career as a teacher in a leading High School and then worked as an Academic Coordinator, Programme Coordinator, and a University Registrar in a leading private university back in my home country.

I was also privileged to work as a Senior Project Coordinator under Care International Australia providing Tertiary Vocational Education Program for less privileged Youth in the post-civil warzone in my county, and that brought me a different experience in my career. I have served as an administrator to the Bachelor of Education (Special) Curriculum Development Programme with University Grant Commission in Sri Lanka. I would like to expand my career into educational entrepreneurship in future.

Reason for becoming an Alumni Ambassador

There are two main reasons for me: The first is gratitude, and the second is I wish to provide more information to prospective students.

Firstly, I was able to receive the global excellence award from the University of Dundee in 2019 during my enrolment so, I believe it is my turn to show my sincere gratitude to the University by promoting it to others.

Secondly, when I joined the University of Dundee, there were very few students from Sri Lanka. However, I had many questions in my mind about the University, programme, accommodation, Dundee, and its lifestyle. I was wishing I knew someone who had already walked the path before me, so that I could ask my questions.

I selected the University and the programme because of its world-wide recognition, and I was able to receive the global excellence award too. I am highly satisfied with the decision that I made to study at Dundee. It is highly professional and friendly as an institution, and the lecturers are very attentive and focused on students’ needs. I received tremendous support from my academic staff in my education, as well as emotional support when I needed it most – which I will always be most grateful for.

Being an international student is a different life-experience, filled with joy, happiness and some challenges too. Therefore, I would like to be able to share information about my Dundee experience, and the lifestyle to encourage other international students, especially from Sri Lanka, to go out of their comfort zone and come to study at Dundee.
