Life Sciences students recognised in University Awards

The University careers service announced the winners of this year's Dundee Plus Awards at an online ceremony last week.
These awards honour students who have developed transferrable skills through a host of extra-curricular activities.
Life Sciences were well represented with a number of students from the School named as finalists. Sophie Stewart and Caitlin Kavanagh were named as winners in their respective categories.
Caitlin Kavanagh (Year 4 Physiological Sciences) was named 2020 Volunteer of the Year. This was in recognition of her work with RAG Dundee, as the SRC Chair and as a class rep within the School of Life Sciences, while holding down multiple part-time jobs. Caitlin has raised thousands of pounds for both the Dundee International Woman’s Centre and the Dundee Foodbank, and has also successfully encouraged DUSA to start a reusable water bottle campaign amongst many other achievements.
Sophie Stewart (Year 3 Biomedical Sciences) was named winner in the 2019/20 Your Dundee Plus category. The lead judge, Charlotte Barbour, Director of Taxation, commented, “Choosing a winner was difficult – but Sophie tipped the balance in undertaking a range of activities, some successfully and another not so, and clearly telling what skills had been learnt, and why they’d be useful as transferable skills.”

2019/20 Your Dundee Plus Finalists:
- Francis Allison – Year 3 Physiological Sciences
- Haniah Sindhoo – MSc in Biomedical and Molecular Sciences (with Business)
2019/20 Business Plus Finalists:
- Julia Wcislo – Doctoral Researcher in Life Sciences
- Haniah Sindhoo – MSc in Biomedical and Molecular Sciences (with Business)
School Tutoring Programme (STP) Plus Participants:
- Amy Yeaman – Year 3 Biomedical Sciences
This programme requires participants to complete a minimum of a 30-hour placement in a local primary or secondary school, complete a project and deliver a presentation. Amy completed her placement at St Andrews RC Primary School and she far exceeded the minimum number of hours required. Her project focused on “The use of technology in a primary school classroom.”
