Tong Lei graduated with a Law (Eng/NI) LLB Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1) degree in 2024 and reflects on his time at the University of Dundee.

When deciding which University to attend, Tong researched his options online and consulted with a counsellor from the Southwest University of Political Science & Law. Tong said, “The University of Dundee has a strong reputation in law and an excellent faculty with a comprehensive curriculum. Additionally, the availability of scholarships and the picturesque campus environment were significant factors in my decision to study there.”

Speaking about his programme of study specifically, Tong said “The best aspect of my law course was the practicality of what I learned. The faculty members were experts in their fields and passionate educators who were always available for guidance. The course structure was well-balanced, providing a strong theoretical foundation along with practical skills essential for a legal career.”

The University of Dundee offers students the chance to apply for internships to develop employability skills and gain valuable work experience. Tong Lei recognises the internship opportunities available and what he gained from the experience. “I completed an internship at a Chinese law firm in London during my second summer here. This experience was invaluable as it built me a great interest in international arbitration which was also the topic of my dissertation.

“I worked on various cases concerning international disputes, assisted a senior arbitration lawyer in legal research, and observed the proceedings. They significantly enhanced my understanding of the legal profession and the arbitral procedural rules.”

Tong notes that the facilities available at the University of Dundee are “excellent”. These include “a well-stocked library, modern classrooms, and advanced research centres”. He said, “The student services were exceptional, providing career counselling, mental health support, and academic assistance. The vibrant campus life and the beautiful surroundings added to the overall positive experience.”

Speaking about the city of Dundee, Tong said, “Dundee is a charming city with a rich cultural scene and a friendly community. The city boasts beautiful parks, museums, and galleries, providing plenty of opportunities for recreation and learning. The waterfront area is particularly scenic, offering a perfect place to relax and enjoy the view. Especially, the most impressive would be the V&A Art Gallery, which regularly holds art exhibitions.”

Summarising his time studying at the University of Dundee, Tong said “My education gave me the confidence and competence to excel in the legal field, along with a network of professionals and personal connections that I will cherish forever.”
