Dr Duncan Pickard was a lecturer at Leeds University and moved into full-time farming in Scotland, in 1992. He is a Council Member of the Henry George foundation. Established in 1929, it aims to administer a Trust Fund for spreading a wider knowledge of the social and economic teaching of Henry George as set forth in his books.

Henry George was a political economist whose work was popular in the 19th century and was based on the belief that people should own the value they produce themselves, but that the economic value derived from land (including natural resources) should belong equally to all members of society.
