‘Reading Water’ is based around my relationship with water and my experiences as a whitewater kayaker. My textiles reflect the energy, intensity and tranquillity of Scottish rivers.
‘Reading Water’ is the term kayakers use to describe reading and running a river – the ability to see and understand the dynamics of the water in order to choose the best line to descend a rapid. The project reflects this profound connection I have with water through time spent on the river.
Through two collections, ‘Whitewater’ and ‘Deepwater’, I have reflected on the turbulent energy of rivers as they carve their way through the landscape, alongside a sense of peace and solitude that I feel when out on the water.
