Urban Dichotomy is a project focused on the contrast within urban environments and modern cities, drawn from my experiences living in the city of Dundee.

The project highlights and celebrates the contrasting elements that coexist within modern cities. I investigated Dundee's rich history and architecture that preserves its unique character. While also taking inspiration from the new and ongoing waterfront regeneration project.
Finding beauty in the run-down and often overlooked areas of Dundee by focusing on the interesting textures and imperfections found within the city. These unique textures paired with the bright colours and mark-making created by local graffiti have allowed me to collect an assortment of exciting visual information. I added the sleek and contemporary feel of the waterfront by taking a collection of images with the clean geometric shapes and irregular stripes found by the V&A. These images created fantastic compositions that inspired the pattern and shape within areas of the collection.
Using a range of mixed media within my development allowed me to create a range of interesting textures and patterns used to inspire my samples. I used both domestic and dubied machines allowing a wider range of techniques to experiment with. Transferred stitches and inlay allowed bright pops of colour to peak through samples. E-wrapping allowed me to create large splashes of colour cutting through samples to diversify the scale within my collection.
With bright pops of colour, unique texture and bold compositions I hope to celebrate Dundee's unappreciated charm and highlight the unique contrast throughout the city.
