Jenni Sheward

I enjoy exploring themes of history, mythology, and the natural world. I take particular interest in the Scottish context as I have a local connection and can relate to the current and historical environments.

My main projects from fourth year are an illustrated non-fiction book of mythological Scottish creatures, a series of illustrations for a potential non-fiction project about the RRS Discovery’s journey to Antarctica and a cover design for the novel ‘Daisy Jones and the Six’.

My mythological book ‘Creatures of Alba’ explores mysterious and well-known creatures from Scotland’s past and folklore in an art style inspired by Medieval illuminated manuscripts. The book is for a general audience and aims to evoke the feelings of magic and superstition felt towards these creatures in the past.

My RRS Discovery project illustrates the personal stories of the crew of the Discovery ship as they were trapped in Antarctica for two years from 1902 to 1904. The project is educational and entertaining, making viewers aware of the antics of the Discovery crew that sometimes feels like the plot of a movie.

My cover design of ‘Daisy Jones...’ is from the competition brief of Penguin Cover Design award. I created an illustration inspired by a scene of the novel that has a 70s Rock and Roll theme.

I aim to continue these projects and other topics that inspire me. I wish for my work to be both educational and spark joy in others.
