Kyle Angel Leeson

Kyle Angel Leeson is an artist working without discipline, favouring soft sculpture and moving image. Informed by their lived experience as a trans person searching for belonging and community in a cishet world, their practice endeavours to document the sanctity of trans love and connection whilst seeking comfort and safety to cope with isolation and threat.

‘Nothing Changes Overnight’ is an immersive installation with an ethereal atmosphere offering relief and escapism. Lacking safety and comfort, the artist creates soft sculptures to emulate these feelings in the space. The textural softness of these angular shapes conveys a duality of the trans experience; longing and isolation parallel to love and euphoria. A winged vest speaks to our need to feel fierce and protected; being an angel braced for combat is how we survive the battleground of everyday trans life.  

Their documentary films capture moments of connection and vulnerability; narrating a story of longing, love and hope. Revealing these intimacies conveys the care and love between trans people, highlighting the joy in connecting with our siblings in comparison to everyday isolation and the struggle to feel seen.  

In a world that actively tries to erase trans people, this exhibition is a vital celebration of the complexities of trans livelihood and a sanctuary of rest and reassurance. Trans lives are sacred. You are loved. The place you’re building is in reach – but nothing changes overnight.
