About

Millie Strachan

This year I worked across various animation disciplines and films to develop my abilities as a storyteller. It is important to me to create striking visuals and a strong sense of atmosphere in my work. I have found the Animation course allows me to express myself and tell stories in a way that can connect with people - not only the people who engage with my work but those I collaborate with to produce it. The collaborative nature of animation and the way it encourages the joining of talents and ideas to create work is just as beautiful to me as the final products can be.

For my graduate film ‘The Curious Happenings of No. 24, 10th Avenue’ I was the director and also worked as a character designer, concept artist, background artist, animator and compositor. With this project I wanted to create an atmospheric piece about the joys of people-watching. I am extremely grateful for all the hard-working people I collaborated with to make this film and feel we managed to create something that showcases our talents well.

This year I also worked on a personal collaborative project with Katy Rigby called ‘Mold’ which we plan to continue developing. The project will be a foray into more abstract storytelling through delineation from conventional animation principles. I also collaborated again with Katy on her own graduate film ‘Tailslide’ as the production manager and a background artist.

You can see some examples of my work below, or visit my website to see the projects in full.

This is an excerpt from my graduation film 'The Curious Happenings of No.24, 10th Avenue', I was responsible for the background art, the animation of the little boy character and the compositing. The animation of the chef character was a joint effort between Hannah Drummond, Dani McIntyre and Oliver Thomson. The animation of the poet character was by Katy Rigby. The animation of the steam was by Calder Chen. You can view the full film at the degree show!
