Illustration BDes (Hons)

Exploration of depth and ways in which I can bring 2D images to life through experimentation of materials, creating surface objects and Sculpture.

About

In my last year studying illustration I’ve explored many different sides of my creativity. I’ve made full use of the workshops this semester including screen printing, laser cutting and the wood workshop. In preparation for these spaces I’ve had to prepare several prototypes, blueprints and diagrams, with mathematics and measuring involved to achieve what I had set out.

One study that represents my work the best is the V&A X Tartan project, where we were tasked to create one print and surface object to sell, inspired by the Tartan Exhibition. For this I developed several quick and expressive strokes of black and red on a white background, making my own tartan pattern which later inspired my Scottish Terrier Designs. With the limited colour palate of red white and black I made a wrapping paper with these dogs sporting my original abstract Tartan design, suitable for any occasion or celebration.

For my Surface Object I made several prototypes of a put together, pop out, wooden dog with a tartan coat. This took several attempts to ensure the pieces fit perfectly but also with ease. The child like fun nature of the design makes it a perfect, inexpensive gift for young children but can also be used as a note holder or display piece, making it suitable for the more mature consumer.

Through out my development and studies, as an artist I’m not afraid to be messy and I embrace the mistakes I make. I don’t go with my first idea rather I allow the work to inspire my next move!
